The Avengers Villain Rumours Finally Put to Rest

OK, so I was wrong.

The Skrulls are not making an appearance in Joss Whedon’s The Avengers.

Producer Kevin Feige, in an interview with Empire Magazine, finally put the rumours to rest:

Who said they were aliens? It’s not Skrulls, I’ve been clear about that. Beyond that, we want to hide it. The identity of the alien race is not impactful. It exists in the comic books, but we’re not setting up the Kree-Skrull war or anything like that.

Um… Confusing much? They’re not aliens but they’re an alien race that exists in the Marvel Universe? Unless he means alien as in Asgardian, which now I come to think of it makes a lot more sense seeing as Loki features heavily in the film. Hmmm…

And on the rumour of the Red Skull making an appearance (which was actually news to me), he had this to say:

Was Skull vaporised at the end of the movie, or thrust into another realm? That remains to be seen. It would be fun to see Skull in future, but he’s not in this one.

Which may or may not hint at the Red Skull’s return somewhere down the line.

Now all of this does kinda leave things wide open – there are a lot of ‘alien’ races in the Marvel Universe after all. If I’m gonna be honest I am a little disappointed it’s not the shape-shifting Skrulls. On the plus side I’m loving that they’ve managed to keep the identity of the villains a secret. I want to know, but I don’t – if that makes sense.

So who could it be?

Your guess is as good as mine. At this point I’m going for an embittered Squirrel Girl and a horde of mutated squirrels.
